In 2020 The Bibliothèque nationale de France exhibits at the Grand Palais the black and white masterpieces from its photographic collections, exceptionally taken out of its reserves for the occasion. Nadar, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, Willy Ronis, Robert Doisneau, Helmut Newton, Diane Arbus, Mario Giacomelli, Robert Franck, William Klein, Daido Moriyama, Valérie Belin, Lita Cerqueira… the big names in French and international photography come together in a journey that embraces 150 years of history of black and white photography, from its origins in the 19th century to contemporary creation. The 300 prints presented show, in a world increasingly saturated with color, the strength of the black and white aesthetic, which has come to embody the very essence of photography.
