La Photographie telle que je suis (The Photography as I Am) by Lita Cerqueira (born 1952) is the downloadable edition of the catalogue published for the exhibition presented in our gallery space from 4 May to 3 June 2012. The publication is inspired by the major retrospective A Fotografia como Eu Sou (The Photography as I Am), held at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo from 7 November 2009 to 7 February 2010, which brought renewed attention to the depth and cultural importance of the artist’s work. The original printed catalogues from both the Pinacoteca retrospective and our gallery exhibition are now sold out, making this digital edition the only available way to access the material.
This edition brings together a distinguished selection of photographs that have become essential references in the visual history of Afro‑Brazilian culture. Through portraits, street scenes, and moments of everyday life, the catalogue reveals nearly four decades of creation shaped by Cerqueira’s sensitive and incisive gaze. Her images illuminate the dignity, poetry, and cultural richness of the people of Bahia, offering a rare and compelling visual testimony.
The publication includes an introduction by Ricardo Fernandes, as well as texts by Diógenes Moura, one of São Paulo’s most respected photography curators, and by Gilberto Gil, celebrated musician, composer, and Brazilian Grammy Award winner. Their contributions provide valuable context for understanding Cerqueira’s artistic legacy and the cultural environment in which her work developed.
This downloadable edition offers an accessible way to explore a significant document of contemporary Brazilian photography. It is appreciated by collectors, researchers, and photography enthusiasts, and provides a meaningful opportunity to experience one of Brazil’s most powerful artistic voices.
