This downloadable catalogue accompanies the exhibition Der Sturm (The Tempest) by Brazilian photographer Lucia Adverse, presented at the Inimá de Paula Museum in Belo Horizonte from 7 March to 7 April 2014. The project was developed during the cultural exchange between Brazil and Germany in 2014 and reflects a long‑term research into architecture, cinema, and the visual culture of the early twentieth century. As stated in the original editorial, the exhibition reveals “the architecture of Germany and its enriching coexistence with its History, with the culture of the early twentieth century and with its present time” .

Lucia Adverse (born 1967) is known for her photographic investigations into architecture and urban space. Her work for Der Sturm began with studies of New York architecture in 2008 and evolved into a broader exploration of the visual language of German Expressionism and the dramatic contrasts of Film Noir. The catalogue explains that the artist’s research “initiates from the study of Cinema Noir and its influences derived from architecture,” later expanding into Expressionist painting and woodcut traditions .

The series was photographed in New York, Berlin, Paris and São Paulo, each city contributing a distinct historical and aesthetic layer to the project. The title Der Sturm refers to the influential German Expressionist magazine created in 1910 by Herwarth Walden, which played a central role in shaping the movement. The exhibition presents twenty‑three large‑format photographs from the German phase, printed on fine art paper and framed according to museum standards, offering a visual dialogue between past and present, architecture and memory, shadow and light.

The catalogue also includes critical texts that situate Adverse’s work within broader artistic contexts. Art historian Marc Soleranski describes her approach as one that transforms architectural detail into poetic composition, noting that “Lucia Adverse turns her objective into subjective,” revealing the expressive potential of light, rhythm, and form . Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in Paris, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Tiradentes, and has been recognized for its ability to merge architectural observation with a deeply personal visual language.

This downloadable edition offers an accessible way to explore the conceptual and visual foundations of Der Sturm. For collectors and photography enthusiasts who prefer a physical object, the printed catalogue remains available for purchase through our Shop, providing a tangible record of one of the artist’s most significant projects.

Both formats offer a meaningful opportunity to engage with a body of work that connects contemporary photography to the cultural and aesthetic legacy of German Expressionism and Film Noir, interpreted through the precise and sensitive gaze of a Brazilian artist.
